Living to Your Own Drumbeat: On Being Enough for Yourself

I studied for weeks, and I still didn’t pass.
I gave it my all, and it still wasn’t enough.
I know I’m worthy of a love greater than the one I settled for.
Why can’t they see that I’m enough?

If any of these thoughts have ever crossed your mind, you may be carrying the feeling that you’re not enough for the world. So let’s pause right there.

You were placed in this world for a reason. You matter. You are enough. Just because the people around you don’t see your worth doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

Being enough starts on the inside

I like to believe the energy we put into the world is a mirror of the energy within us. When you feel worthy on the inside, that feeling shows up in the connections you build. And when you truly believe you are enough, you no longer have to wonder what other people think of you.

Being enough for yourself is freedom from other people’s standards. Don’t spend your life trying to measure up to someone else’s idea of “enough.” Live to your own drumbeat.

Rearranging the room

Picture this. While you’re out, someone rearranges everything in your room. When you come home, nothing is where you need it. You feel like a stranger in your own space, so you move it all back to fit the way you live. Simple fix, right?

So if rearranging a room for comfort is that simple, why is it so hard to rearrange the thoughts we have about ourselves?

To be clear, being enough for yourself doesn’t mean ignoring other people’s kindness. It means you stop waiting for permission to believe in yourself. Self-love can be practiced in many ways, and knowing you are enough is one of the most freeing.

Maybe this sounds familiar

We all know someone who has been here. Maybe it’s a friend. Maybe it’s you.

She’s in a relationship where she never feels like enough. Or maybe she’s “too much.” Either way, she doesn’t fit their standards. She blames everyone else for the hurt she feels, without stopping to be honest with herself. The truth is they simply aren’t compatible, and she can’t see it yet.

It takes many nights of tears and asking “Why am I not good enough?” before she realizes it’s time to look in the mirror. She’s been basing her worth on a version of herself she created to fit somewhere she didn’t belong. It’s her mindset that needs rearranging.

That’s the day she meets a piece of her true self. And from there, she keeps looking a little deeper, rearranging her perspective, and living to her own drumbeat.

How to begin

  1. Rearrange your thoughts. Notice the stories you tell yourself about what “enough” means, and whose voice they’re in.
  2. Stop outsourcing your worth. Other people’s opinions are information, not a verdict.
  3. Find what makes you happy. Not what should, what does.
  4. Name what you’re proud of. Write down three things about yourself you’d brag about for a friend.
  5. Notice how you already love yourself. You’re probably doing more than you give yourself credit for.
  6. Look in the mirror and reflect. Then write down what you see.

Tools that may help

These are some of the tools that can help you remember you are enough for yourself. Take what fits and leave the rest.

To practice

  • Journaling
  • Meditation
  • Movement, like running, dancing or yoga
  • Positive affirmations
  • Self-compassion
  • Listening to yourself when you give advice to others

To lean on

Try it on paper

Grab your journal and take five quiet minutes with these prompts:

  1. Whose idea of “enough” have I been trying to live up to?
  2. What would “enough” look like if I defined it myself?
  3. What’s one thing I already do that shows I love myself?
  4. What would I tell a friend who felt the way I feel today?

Looking for a place to write it all down? The Loving the Becoming Journal has 100+ open pages made for exactly this kind of reflection, from our Reflect collection.

You are worth it

There’s no step-by-step manual for loving yourself. It’s a journey of many strides, and it asks for patience, forgiveness, faith, courage and consistency. Wherever you are on that path, remember that the best things rarely come easy, but when you’re open to them, they come right on time.

So say it out loud: I am worth it. I am enough for myself. ♡
